「Eyes Closed 」（アイズ・クローズド）は、エド・シーラン（Ed Sheeran）が近日発売するニュー・アルバム『-（サブトラクト）』からの最初のシングルで、アルバムは彼の“マスマティックス・プロジェクト”を締めくくる作品となっている。
この歌の背景には、エドシーランが愛する妻の闘病と、大切な友人の死に打ちひしがれていたことによる喪失感があります。
エドは、この曲に数年にわたり取り掛かっていたそうで、最初は別れの曲として書かれていたものだが、“悲痛な喪失感”を味わった際に、この曲を再訪することになったと公式MVに伴う声明で説明していた。
エドは、「この曲は、誰かを失うことについてで、出かけるたびに、その人にばったり会うことを期待したり、あらゆることがその人やその人と一緒にしたことを思い出させることについて歌っている」と綴っており、「喪失の痛みを麻痺させるために、自分自身を現実から切り離す必要があるけれど、何かがきっかけで再び現実に引き戻されてしまう」と続けていた。
5月5日にリリースされるアルバム『-（サブトラクト）』は、親友であるオーストラリアのマッシュルーム・グループ創設者の故マイケル・グディンスキーの死、妻チェリー・シーボーンの腫瘍診断、親友の故ジャマル・エドワーズを失ったことなど、“悲しみと希望を背景に”書かれた“魂のこもった”コレクションであると説明されている。
